Saylor named committee co-chair

SUNBURY - Northumberland County Judge Charles H. Saylor has been named co-chairperson of the Transitional Youth Committee under the auspices of the Pennsylvania Office of Children and Families in the Courts.

The focus of the committee is on teens transitioning out of foster care. The 16-member committee will issue a report next year identifying the best practices in various counties and other states and make other recommendations for youth who may potentially "age out" of the system.

The other co-chairperson is Vanessa Garrett Harley, deputy commissioner for Children and Youth Services in Philadelphia.

The first meeting of the committee was held Thursday in Mechanicsburg.

Clean up for ABA Day

ASHLAND - Borough Manager Thomas Joyce asked residents to clean up their properties in preparation for the first "ABA Pride Day" to be held Saturday, Sept. 3.

The day will include music in Eureka Park from 2 p.m., followed by a parade/motorcade beginning at 7 p.m. The last ABA parade was in 2008.

GED test procedures listed

MONTANDON - The General Educational Development (GED) Test, which enables adults who have withdrawn from school to earn a Commonwealth Secondary Diploma, will be given in September at the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit (CSIU) main office.

The GED exam is made up of five parts: English/writing skills, reading, social studies, science and mathematics.

Applicants are encouraged to attend a free screening at the Bloomsburg, Lewisburg, Milton, Shamokin or Sunbury site to determine test readiness. Test takers must attend one of three orientation sessions at the CSIU on Monday, Sept. 12. To be scheduled for an orientation session, call the CSIU between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at 523-1155, ext. 2327, print both registration forms at www.GED123.org, purchase a money order ($65 for complete test, $15 for single test) made out to "CSIU" and mail registration forms and money order to CSIU/GED, PO Box 213, Lewisburg 17837. Bring a government photo ID card and a second proof of address to orientation.
