MOUNT CARMEL - One man is injured and another person is being questioned by police after the man suffered a gunshot wound while in a car stopped at a stop sign on East Avenue just after 10 p.m. Friday.
Initial scanner reports said the man may have shot himself, but police could not confirm nor deny the report.
The man was reportedly lying in the road when police were summoned. The gun was unsecure at the time of the first call.
According to witnesses, the car, a blue Pontiac Grand Prix, had been traveling west on East Avenue and was stopped at a stop sign at the intersection with Market Street.
A woman, who lives in a nearby home and declined to give her name, said she heard someone yell for help while she was in her house watching television. She went outside and saw "a bunch of people around the car with cell phones calling 911."
She said she did not hear any gunshots.
Police are interviewing another person believed to have been in the car with the man at the time of the shooting.
A landing zone for LifeFlight was established at Mount Carmel Area Jr./Sr. High School.
Three police cruisers escorted an ambulance to the landing zone, according to scanner reports.
East Avenue past Market Street was closed to traffic while police conducted their investigation, but Route 61 remained open.
No more information was available at press time.
