Shamokin Township board addresses concerned about speeding drivers

SHAMOKIN TOWNSHIP - A resident of Captain Bloom Road asked Shamokin Township supervisors for help in slowing down drivers.

"Drivers are going at least 55 to 60 on that road, and tractor trailers are using their 'jake brakes' way too soon," Frank Gricoskie told supervisors during the monthly meeting. "There is going to be a bad accident on that road someday due to speed."

Gricoskie said that PennDOT previously placed signs warning residents about their speed and a state police trooper once parked - during the day - at his driveway.

Gricoskie said any action from PennDOT to help curb speeders must be requested by the township. However, supervisors said a better idea would be to involve the state police.

"A state police cruiser on the road will speak more that any sign we put up," Supervisor John Klinger said.

Supervisors directed township solicitor Jim Bathgate to write letters to PennDOT and the state police, asking for assistance.

Bus parking

Also discussed was a request by Marvin Klinger Inc. to park a full-size school bus near the township building.

The company asked for the spot in order to save gas for a driver who lives in the township and handles the Shamokin Area School District route there.

At first, the board seemed receptive to the idea, provided a letter was received from the bus company clearing the township from any indemnity of damage while it is parked there.

Supervisor Paul Rapp, however, objected.

"During the winter months, if we have a bad snowstorm, the bus won't run. It could be in the way of our salt and plow trucks," Rapp said.

In addition, supervisors considered where the bus would plug in to preheat its engine block.

"We don't have the facilities for that here, and we are not paying for the electricity for it," supervisor Greg Rachau said.

Supervisors ultimately decided against letting the bus park at the municipal complex.

In other business, Tracey Hile was appointed the township's new tax collector, effective Jan. 1. The appointment was made now to give Hile time to get state clearances for the job.
