ATLAS - An Atlas man was allegedly robbed of approximately $100 and shot in the left foot early Wednesday morning in his East Columbia Avenue home near the Viaduct.

Mount Carmel Township Police Chief Brian Hollenbush said police responded to 450 E. Columbia Ave. at 4:18 a.m. for a report of a robbery and shooting.

He said the victim, Ronald Carey, 33, suffered a minor injury when shot in the left foot and was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, where he underwent emergency room treatment before being released.

Hollenbush said the victim, who lives alone, told police two black males dressed in all black clothing broke into his home through a rear door, shot him with his own .22-caliber rifle and stole approximately $100 in cash before fleeing the scene on foot.

Hollenbush said the assailants reportedly were waiting for Carey to come downstairs as he was getting ready for work at Waste Management.

The police chief said the victim was interviewed and the investigation is ongoing.

Caution tape surrounded the front of the home and neighboring properties at 452 and 454 E. Columbia Ave., while investigators continued their probe inside Carey's residence until 11:15 a.m.

Assisting Hollenbush at the scene were Mount Carmel Township Patrolmen Matt Filarski and Michael Pitcavage, Mount Carmel police and Cpl. Dean Benedict of the state police forensics services unit at Montoursville.

Hollenbush said Filarski is the lead investigator in the case.
