TREVORTON - Dorothy Renn will admit she was a little emotional Friday morning when each of the 18 children in her pre-kindergarten class at Line Mountain Elementary Center presented her with a floral tribute in recognition of her upcoming retirement.
"I'm going to miss these kids," she said during a brief ceremony that preceded the start of class. "And I'll miss my co-workers, too, because they were great helpers."
The presentation of individual flowers to the teacher was a token of appreciation for the time and effort she spent during a 25-year career in the teaching profession, the last nine years of which were spent in the Trevorton center. Previous to her service there, she worked for 16 years in the Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit's Head Start program.
"It has been a wonderful career," she said. "Teaching has been more fun than just being a job. But the time has come for me to relax and enjoy retirement. My husband, George, and I plan to travel and visit our four children and eight grandchildren in various parts of the nation, including Indiana and Virginia and in Lancaster here in Pennsylvania.".
A resident of Market Street, Trevorton, Renn said she enjoyed teaching the three-to-five-year-old pre-schoolers and watched with satisfaction as they learned many fundementals in education, including counting, spelling and reading.
The native of Centralia decided on a teaching profession after graduating from Our Lady of Lourdes Regional High School in 1971. She completed studies in early childhood and elementary education at Bloomsburg State College and began teaching a short time later.
Many parents of the children were on hand to join them in offering best wishes to Renn on her retirement.
The Trevorton resident is married to George Renn, a retired maintenance worker for the Pennsylvania Power and Light Co. Their children are Becky Feese, Robert, Nicole Barnes and Jennifer Bushong.
