SHAMOKIN - American Legion Auxiliary Unit 73 elected officers for 2011-2012 at a recent meeting.
Officers are: President, Bonnie Alleman; vice president, Lois McCormick; secretary, Jamie Bordell; treasurer, Cindy Mervine; chaplain, Debra Christian; sergeant-at-arms, Chris Bixler, and historian, Karen Straub.
Members reviewed the activities of the auxiliary, and discussed goals for the year. A complete review will take place at the September meeting.
Meetings are held on the fourth Tuesday of the month, with the next meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 27, at a location to be announced. Members discussed the present fundraiser of selling chances on a handmade Americana quilt. Anyone wishing to purchase a chance can contact Alleman or attend the next meeting in September. The drawing will be held Dec. 17.
The auxiliary was instrumental in presenting two seniors, Amanda Miller, from Lourdes Regional, and Eric Shultz, Shamokin Area, with the Military Service Award.
Bordell and Christine Noll attended the Six-County Council meeting June 2 at the Northumberland American Legion. The next meeting will be held Oct. 6 at the Sunbury American Legion.
The annual auxiliary picnic will be held at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 23, at the home of Debbie Christian. Members who plan to attend are asked to bring a covered dish. District President Linda McDonald will be present to install the officers.
The auxiliary is sponsoring a membership drive which will kick off at the September meeting. Anyone interested in becoming a member and seeking more information and an application can call Bordell, the membership chair, at 648-5247.
Women are eligible for membership in the auxiliary if they are themselves a veteran who served honorably, or are the mothers, wives, daughters, sisters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters and grandmothers of an active duty service member or veteran who was honorably discharged during any of the eligible war eras, from World War I to present.
Step-relatives are also eligible.
