MOUNT CARMEL - Firefighters endured extreme heat and high humidity as they battled a fire that damaged four row homes on North Market Street.

Fire and emergency personal responded to the fire at 45-51 N. Market St. around 10 p.m. Friday.

Fire Chief Jack Williams said when fire crews arrived on the scene, flames were shooting out of the front bedroom windows on the second floor of the home at 45 N. Market St.

The home was being rented by Garry and Audry Reigle. They lived there with their 4-year-old girl, Madison, and 3-month-old girl, Kylee. The family was in Sunbury at a cookout when a family friend alerted them of the fire. However, their 7-year-old black Labrador, Roxy, and several cats were there.

"A neighbor told me she witnessed a man break through the police line to save my dog," Garry Reigle said. "The man saved her."

The fire was contained to the home where it started, but three neighboring homes sustained heat and smoke damage; two of the houses on the end were vacant.

The occupied home at 47 N. Market St. belonged to Maria Johnston, 89, who made it out safely and watched the fire from across the street. She was alerted to the fire when a man came through her front door to warn her.
