SUNBURY - As predicted, the crest of the Susquehanna River came in the early morning hours Saturday, causing minor to moderate flooding along its banks.
As of 5:30 p.m. Saturday, seven roads in Northumberland County remained closed due to high water, mostly in the Herndon and Upper Augusta Township areas.
"It is pretty much the roads that are affected when the heavy rains come and the river overflows its bank," said Paul Froutz, director of Public Safety for Northumberland County. "We have some moderate flooding in the Herndon area, and the Marina and the Hamilton Underpass."
Other roads remaining closed as of 8:30 p.m. Saturday night included Barry King Bridge in Point Township and Park Drive and Bridge Avenue in Upper Augusta Township,
"The forecast put us right at the crest in the overnight hours, but we are starting to see it recede," Froutz said. "Once the river and stream go below flood stage, the roads will start to open up again."
For Froutz and the rest of his crew, it was an all-night session, watching river levels and assessing damage.
According to the National Weather Service Advanced Hydrologic Prediction Service, out of State College, the Susquehanna River monitoring stations in Sunbury and Bloomsburg reached moderate flooding stage Saturday. Danville remained in the minor flooding area.
