HARRISBURG - The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) today approved funding for expansion of the Shamokin-Coal Township wastewater treatment facility, according to Senator John R. Gordner (R-27).
PENNVEST on Wednesday approved a loan of $7.7 million and a grant of $12.2 million for the $40 million project. The Shamokin-Coal Township Joint Authority previously qualified for $17 million in U.S. Department of Agriculture Loans and $5 million in state funding from the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
The authority has been under a Department of Environmental Protection consent order since 2005 to eliminate overflows and untreated discharges. The PENNVEST awards will allow for completion of the upgraded plant by the fall of 2012.
"This project will eliminate the discharge of untreated wastewater into the environment and allow for expansion of the system's capacity, providing for the potential for future economic growth," said Senator Gordner. "I'm pleased PENNVEST recognized the need and potential of this project."
PENNVEST is an independent state agency that provides financial assistance to upgrade sewer, water, storm water and drinking water projects throughout the Commonwealth.
