An event will be hosted by Bishop Joseph P. McFadden at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Cardinal Keeler Center in Harrisburg to help kick off a Catholic radio station set to hit the airways in early August.

Through the efforts of Holy Family Radio, a Catholic radio station will soon launch on WHYF AM 720, which will reach into portions of 12 counties and more than one million people.

WHYF plans to air locally generated faith-based programming as well as material from the EWTN Radio Network based in Birmingham, Ala., including weekday Mass, daily prayer services and other Catholic devotionals. Listeners will also be able to hear classic radio dramas and faith, family and cultural discussions and current news coverage.

The station hopes to produce local programming and has offered free air time to McFadden to help him communicate and interact with his flock. The station will also offer free on-air announcements of community and religious events.

The station will be supported by local listeners with tax-deductible donations along with limited business sponsorship and underwriting availabilities to allow Catholic radio to be viable in Central Pennsylvania, according to Doug Neatrour, general manager.
