SHAMOKIN - A former mail carrier in Shamokin will plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to deliver mail, according to U.S. Attorney Peter J. Smith.

Smith said an arraignment is slated for July 27 for Robert Hogan, 40.

Smith confirmed that Hogan has signed a plea agreement. The government has agreed to recommend probation.

The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General and prosecution is being handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Frederick E. Martin.

Hogan is charged with "quitting and deserting commercial circulars" on several occasions from July 1 through at least Sept. 10, 2010. He neither delivered the circulars nor brought them back to the post office at the termination of his route, the postal service reported. Smith said the circulars were not thrown away, but he didn't have information about what Hogan allegedly did with them.

Hogan's employment with the Shamokin Post Office was terminated in October, but Smith said it was for reasons unrelated to the charge. He did not have details on his firing, and the postmaster at Shamokin declined to comment about Hogan or the case.

If convicted, Hogan could be imprisoned for up to one year and fined $25,000.

The U.S. Attorney's Office lists Hogan as a "former" Shamokin man, but Smith could not provide information about where he now lives.
