DALMATIA - A key road in a traffic detour in effect for a bridge replacement project in lower Northumberland County was closed for more than five hours Tuesday because of a traffic accident on Route 147.

The crash occurred about 11 a.m. at Route 147 and Mountain Road, about two miles south of Dalmatia, when a tractor-trailer crashed and brought down a utility pole and wires onto the highway.

Route 147 was initially closed because the highway was blocked, PennDOT reported at 11:45 a.m. At 1 p.m., the highway was reopened, but Mountain Road at its intersection with Route 147 remained closed because of the downed wires.

Mountain Road is part of the detour route for the Route 147 bridge project in Dalmatia, so PennDOT had to establish another much longer detour that took motorists through the area using Routes 25, 225 and 209 to get back to Route 147 in Millersburg or Mandata, or to other township roads in the case of local residents.

PennDOT reported at 5 p.m. that Mountain Road at Route 147 was reopened.

State police at Stonington had not issued a report on the accident as of Tuesday evening.
