Feb. 3 - A winter storm was to blame for a box truck shearing off a utility pole on Sunbury Street, which snagged traffic traveling north on Route 61. Coal Township helped Shamokin by buying a load of road salt for the cash-strapped community.

Feb. 4 - A fire leveled a large shed and the farming equipment inside it at the property of Victor and Irene Zubritski, of Dornsife. Fortunately, their home was spared.

Feb. 5 - Shamokin City Council, still waiting for approval on a loan to pay $800,000 in bills from 2013, announced plans to ask the workers from the street department to forgo overtime pay in exchange for compensatory time.

Feb. 5 - Shamokin City Clerk Steve Bartos resigned, but officials would not comment on the reason for his leaving.

Feb. 6 - A judge granted requests from both sides in the Elyett Barbour case when a psychiatric evaluation was ordered to determine if Barbour was competent to stand trial on capital murder charges. A Maryland psychiatrist was appointed at a cost of $600 per hour.

Feb. 7 - A Mount Carmel man informed a county judge that he would be taking charges of neglecting his 86-year-old mother to trial.

Feb. 8 - Discovery of a Milton woman, wounded by gunshot, in her car along Irish Valley Road prompted a day-long investigation into the attempted homicide. Two persons of interest were taken into custody on drugs and gun charges.

Feb. 10 - Volunteers from Shamokin and Mount Carmel combined their efforts to revitalize the Relay for Life with plans for a joint event Kemp Memorial Stadium in June.

Feb. 10 - Aaron W. Rothermel, 22, of Trevorton, was charged with homicide by vehicle as the driver of a vehicle in an accident that killed Jared J. Wood, 18, of Trevorton, Jan. 19, 2013,.

Feb. 10 - A fuel oil leak from the former Dalmatia Elementary School dumped about 1,250 gallons of fuel into the Lower Mahanoy Township Municipal Authority wastewater treatment plant, shutting the plant down for cleanup.

Feb. 11 - Complete Healthcare Resources gave Northumberland County a windfall by announcing it would pay the $9.8 million it owes from the 2010 purchase of the Mountain View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Coal Township, by the end of the month.

Feb. 13 - Shamokin City Council struck an agreement with its street department workers to eliminate overtime pay for the remainder of 2014. In exchange, workers could receive up to 10 days of compensation time.

Feb. 16 - In a published interview, accused murderer Miranda Barbour said she killed at least 22 other people before she murdered Troy LaFerrara, of Port Trevorton. Northumberland County District Attorney Tony Rosini said he was skeptical of her claims and added the interview would not change his approach to prosecuting the case.

Feb. 18 - Residents living on Chestnut Street, Kulpmont, were upset when 41 of them received $100 parking tickets for leaving their vehicles on a snow emergency route after an inch of snow fell on the ground.

Feb. 19 - Community leaders met in Coal Township to listen to a representative of the Department of Community and Economic Development talk about commissioning a cost-free study to explore the potential creation of a regional police force.

Feb. 20 - Victoria Fortune, 25, of Coal Township, was arraigned on theft charges after she allegedly collected donations for the family of the late Melissa "Missy" Pangburn, a Shamokin girl killed in a December 2013 fire, but then kept the money. She pleaded guilty to failure to make the required deposition of funds for the $600 she raised and was sentenced to 1 to 23 months in prison.

Feb. 20 - Knoebels announced plans for a new roller coaster coming to the park in 2015. Named "Impulse," the steel roller was conceived and planned by the fourth generation of the Knoebels family.

Feb. 21 - Kulpmont borough officials were worried they would be on the hook for the demolition of another property after part of the former Eagle Sign Company roof collapsed, damaging a nearby box truck.

Feb. 22 - About 20 county fire departments opened their doors for a special tour for 17-month old Bryce Bigler, of Elizabethville, who was diagnosed with Acid Sphingomyelinas Deficiency, a fatal disorder.

Feb. 24 - Chief public defender Edward Greco filed a motion to bring accused murderer Miranda Barbour back to Northumberland County Prison after she was moved to SCI-Muncy for security reasons.

Feb. 24 - Shamokin City Council learned of the desire by the Dollar General chain to purchase the municipal parking lot at Rock and Washington streets for construction of a store and parking lot to replace their Independence Street location.

Feb. 25 - On a 3-2 vote, the Northumberland County Salary Board approved making the chief deputy coroner office a full-time position with benefits and a salary.

Feb. 25 - Kulpmont landlords got a break when borough council voted to lower their rental property fee from $120 to $50 per unit.

Feb. 25 - At a prison board meeting, it was announced that accused murderer Elyett Barbour would return to Northumberland County Prison in a cost-cutting move since his wife, Miranda, also accused in the murder of Troy LaFerrara, was moved to SCI-Muncy.

Feb. 27 - Five teen members of a group known as the "Goon Squad" were charged in the assault of an 18-year-old Shamokin man.

Feb. 28 - Three people were injured, one critically, after the car in which they were riding flipped over at Brewery Curve on Route 61, near Tharptown.

Feb. 28 - A Geisinger nursing supervisor reported shooting victim Salicia Yost, of Milton, was released from the hospital. The two men questioned about the shooting were preparing for a preliminary hearing on gun and drug charges later in the week.
