COAL TOWNSHIP - The newly-formed Lower Anthracite Regional Recreation Committee (LARRC) will sponsor its first golf tournament Saturday, July 16, at Knoebels Three Ponds golf course.

Jerry Waugh, chairman of the tourney, which hopefully will become an annual event, said the committee is seeking additional participants and sponsorships. Waugh gave a detailed outline of the tourney.

Format for the tourney, Waugh explained during a recent meeting of LARRC, will be a four-man scramble with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Cost will be $100 per golfer.

Cost includes green fees, cart fees, breakfast sandwich, lunch, dinner and golf novelties. Hamburgs and hot dogs will be served during play. Two beverage stations will be provided on the course and a chicken barbecue dinner will be served after play. "Participants are going to get a lot for their money," Waugh said.

Prizes will be given for first, second and third place per flight along with door prizes and a 50-50.

Sponsorships are available as follows: Platinum sponsor, $500; Gold, $300; Silver, $200 and Bronze, $100. "Donations of all levels will also be greatly appreciated," Waugh added. All sponsors will also have their signs displayed on holes throughout the course. There will also be Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin contests.

Waugh asked that registrations and checks made out to LARRC be sent out in the next couple days to reserve a spot and to guarantee a spot for the day of fun, sport and fellowship. Registration and payment should be sent to Jerry Waugh, 30 Wilson Ave., Coal Township, 17866.

Anyone seeking additional information can contact Waugh at 975-9406.

The newly-organized volunteer recreation group, is committed to establishing and providing venues of recreation for the area, but most importantly, the youth.

Currently, the group is promoting and actively engaged in the planning of a Regional Recreation Center and construction of a soccer field complex on the grounds near Mountain View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, along Trevorton Road. The group is utilizing the ground donated by Northumberland County Commissioners to Coal Township.

Anyone interested in volunteering time or resources may contact Coal Township Commissioners, Coal Township Manager Robert Slaby or any member of the committee. Next meeting is at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 12, at Brewser's Sports Grille.

In other committee business, Gene Welsh, a member of the recreation group, reported that plans are almost ready for the five-acre parcel, that will include soccer fields, a baseball field, playground and gazebo.

Committee members attending the meeting, in addition to Welsh and Waugh, were George Zarick, president; Carol Waugh, treasurer; Claire Bonshock, vice president; Justin Feudale, Skip Rabuck, Greg Bonshock, Megan Baumgartner and Paul Metrocavage.
