Annual cavalcade Sept. 20

COAL TOWNSHIP - Shamokin Area High School Marching Band will host the 48th Annual Black Diamond Cavalcade of Bands on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Kemp Memorial Stadium.

The cavalcade is a Tournament of Bands-sanctioned event. Competing will be Berwick Area, Donegal Area, Jersey Shore, Lake Lehman, Mifflin County, Shikellamy and Williamsport Area high schools. An exhibition performance will be presented by the Millersburg Area High School Band and closing the evening will be a performance by the host, the Shamokin Area High School Competition Band.

The gates will open at 5 p.m. and the first band performs at 6 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Tickets are available at the gate and the public is welcome.

Open house set next week

COAL TOWNSHIP - An open house is scheduled for 6 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17, at the Shamokin Area Middle/High School.

Parents will have an opportunity to experience a typical day in the life of their children.

Principal Chris Venna will welcome guests in the high school auditorium at 6 p.m. Parents will then follow their children's schedules, spending 10 minutes in each class to learn about content, grading procedures and other classroom activities. At the conclusion, parents will have an opportunity to walk around and familiarize themselves with the school or stop in to speak briefly with individual teachers.

Parents are asked to remember to bring along a copy of their child's schedule to facilitate the program.

Children's ministries kicks off today

SHAMOKIN - The children's ministries at Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, Second and Arch streets, kicks off at 6 p.m. today with the showing of the movie "Frozen."

A snack will be provided. Children from 4 to 12 years old are invited, and parents are welcome. Teens will meet in the youth house.

Community service set for Saturday

COAL TOWNSHIP - Participants in a community service program coordinated by Magisterial District Judge John Gembic III will meet at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Coal Bowl.
